Dr. Janice Piro
Janice Piro, DC, DABCI, is a doctor of chiropractic specializing in internal medicine. She has been in practice in Palm Harbor, Florida since 1989. Graduating from the University of Connecticut in 1979 with a B.S. degree in Physical Education specializing in Athletic Training, she continued her education at the National College of Chiropractic in the Chicago area, and was awarded a second B.S. degree in Human Anatomy and a Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1986. She then located in Florida and opened a practice with a partner in Brandon. Soon realizing that she wanted to expand her knowledge of natural medicine to be more fully equipped to treat her patients’ health concerns, her pursuit of a natural medicine education continued. Janice became certified in Applied Kinesiology (AK - a chiropractic specialty which addresses internal organ imbalances) and Clinical Kinesiology (CK - an expanded version of the original Applied Kinesiology). She has taken numerous courses in natural medicines such as Homeopathy, Herbal Medicine and Nutritional Medicine. In 1998, she completed a board certified, post-doctoral degree in the Diagnosis and Management of Internal Disorders becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Internists (DABCI). Additionally in 2008, Dr. Piro completed a Practical Phytotherapy course under the tutelage of Kerry Bone, BSc (Hons), Dip Phyto, FNIMH, FNHAA, AHG, MCPP, FANTA of the Australian College of Phytotherapy. Growing up in Norwalk, CT, her father, a medical doctor specializing in general surgery, she realized at a young age that she wanted to become a doctor. However, volunteering in the local hospital as a teenager was an eye-opening experience. It was not the place she wanted to work.
“I decided that I wanted to do something that would help keep people healthy, so they’d never have to go to a hospital. I had been involved in many sports all my life and knew how important exercise was to health. Studying athletics in college seemed the most logical thing, although I didn’t know exactly how I was going to do it. That’s when I ran into a relative whom I hadn’t seen in a very long time. We started talking and she told me she was in Chiropractic school. ‘What’s chiropractic?’ I asked. As she explained, the light bulb went off. I had found my profession!” Currently residing in Safety Harbor, Florida with her husband, two sons and a pet Labrador Retriever and Abyssinian cat, Janice stays in shape by practicing competitive swimming and tennis. She is a Black Belt in Karate, as is her oldest son. She holds an advanced license in skydiving and in scuba diving. “Along with being a doctor of natural medicine, I most love being a mom. I never put much attention on motherhood, as I was so involved with my studies. Then I met my husband, Lars, out at the drop zone (the place we skydive). He was like the Pied Piper. The drop zone kids loved him and followed him everywhere. So when we married, I knew we’d have kids one day, and I am so happy we did. My boys are the best!” Professional Experience
